Congressman Jerry Moran today announced Atwood Housing Authority received a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant to address the needs of seniors and persons with disabilities. Recently, HUD awarded competitive grants to public housing authorities throughout the country to allow necessary improvements.

“It is important for the elderly and disabled to have access to quality care at public housing authorities,” Moran said. “This award will give Atwood Housing Authority the funding needed to create an accessible environment for those who reside at the facility.”

The Atwood Housing Authority, for elderly and disabled persons, was awarded a $72,000 Recovery Act grant from HUD to modify their 24 existing public housing units and make them fully accessible for seniors and those who are disabled. The grant will also fund one additional apartment to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) wheelchair specifications and fund the construction of ADA specific wheelchair ramps for each unit and parking lot.

HUD grants awarded to the selected public housing authorities were granted through The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act). The grants awarded to public housing authorities around the country will provide the funding necessary to modify existing public housing units to make them fully accessible or to convert them to be used as space for service provision for seniors and persons with disabilities, thereby helping them to live independently. Housing authorities can also use this funding to improve community facilities to make such spaces accessible and to provide additional space for supportive services targeted to these groups.
