U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Donovan announced that HUD is awarding $96 million in grants to 15 public housing authorities across the country to make substantial improvements to thousands of public housing units nationwide. The Public Housing Capital Funds being awarded are provided through The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) These grants will address the factors creating blighted public housing through renovation of existing housing or demolition and redevelopment of new public housing or a mixture of public housing and non-public housing on the site. The Department is pleased to announce that it has published a Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) making $995 million of Capital Fund Recovery Act funding available to PHAs. The Department is excited about the benefits that will be realized by providing this funding. In addition to providing a powerful stimulus to the economy through job creation, this funding has the potential of transforming the public housing program in a number of ways.
First, it will direct a significant amount of funding to address the needs of the elderly and persons with disabilities. Second, it will provide a substantial amount of funding to transform distressed public housing. Third, it will provide gap financing. Finally, it will make a large investment in improving the energy efficiency and environmental performance of public housing. The Department also issued an email to all PHAs announcing publication of the NOFA.
H1N1 Swine Flu
More people and communities are likely to be affected as influenza is more widely transmitted. The CDC and its partners will continuously monitor national and international data on the severity of illness caused by influenza, will disseminate the results of these ongoing surveillance assessments and will make additional recommendations as needed. Coordination with state and local health officials is strongly encouraged for all businesses so that timely and accurate information can guide appropriate responses in each location where their operations reside. Based on the current status of the presence of confirmed H1N1 Swine flu infections in the US and none confirmed in the National Capital Region (at this time) we must be prepared to prevent the spread of this virus utilizing the appropriate personal hygiene measures. HUD AWARDS $17 MILLION TO HELP DEVELOP HOUSING FOR VERY LOW-INCOME ELDERLY
Senior housing developments in 32 states will receive critically needed funding to get their projects off the ground thanks to $17 million in "pre-development" grants announced today by U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan. The grants are awarded to 61 project sponsors under HUD's Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program.
"These funds can make the difference between senior housing developments being built or never getting off the ground," said Donovan. "This money will help these organizations cope with the complexities of developing vitally important elderly housing projects in their communities."
Section 202 Demonstration Planning Grants (DPG) provide upfront funds for such predevelopment activities as architectural and engineering work, site control, and other expenses related to the development of the projects prior to initial closing. Without the grant funding, such costs would not be reimbursable until closing or would have to come from other funding sources.More>>
