It is not the typical classroom setting. This center has living room environment to create a welcoming atmosphere. It is equipped with six computers, flat screen television, sofa and chairs. It is warm and inviting and everyone who participates wants to return. This center was initially geared for job readiness programs, but has grown into a multi-use center, first stop for GED registration, and tutoring center for after school students.
Ms. Vickie GanucheauResident Initiative Coordinator Housing Authority of the City of Opelousas
SUMMER APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMOne goal of the Opelousas Housing Authority is to empower young people to fulfill their potential by providing resources. Our Agency partnered with a contractor to instill work ethics and teach job skills to young residents by hiring them for a summer apprenticeship program. For many, this was their first employment. They learned the value of a dollar, teamwork, and self discipline. As a result, they have gained confidence and have set life goals. Many are eager to return next year to mentor younger individuals.
Ms. Vickie GanucheauResident Initiative Coordinator Housing Authority of the City of Opelousas

DAY OF CARING Day of Caring is a National United Way volunteer campaign that takes place annually in September to raise awareness of community needs and services, allow contributors to see where their money goes, and involve employees in first - hand experience with area charities. The project goal was to restore the playground equipment and basketball court for the children of Parkview Terrace Apartments. Ms. Melissa GrahamVice President Community RelationsHousing Authority of the City of Tulsa
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INTERVENTION SERVICESNearly one-third of American woman (31%) reported physical or sexual abuse by a husband, boyfriend or partner. After a domestic violence situation that resulted in the death of a long-time resident, the Housing Authority saw the necessity to prepare and train their staff to better identify potential domestic abuse situation as well as how to properly intervene for the safety of all involved. A partnership was developed with Domestic Violence Intervention Services to provide all THA staff with extensive training on all aspects of domestic abuse.
Ms. Melissa GrahamVice President Community RelationsHousing Authority of the City of Tulsa

DYNAMITE DOMINO TOURNAMENT
The Housing Authority's high-rise communities are comprised primarily of elderly and disabled residents. AmeriCorps members are placed in these communities to provide these residents with activity and social skills building. The AmeriCorps members listened to the residents' discussions and observed how the game of dominoes brought the residents together. In December 2007, the Tulsa SHARE AmeriCorps members and service coordinators from those sites planned a Domino tournament with each of three high-rise sites competing against each other to win a trophy.
Ms. Melissa GrahamVice President Community RelationsHousing Authority of the City of Tulsa

FIRE SAFETY
Fire safety and prevention are important skills for any individual. Due to an increase in the number of apartment fires seen by the Tulsa Housing Authority (THA) in 2008, a fire safety training was created by THA's Training Manager. The Program educates residents on how to prevent apartment fires and how to be prepared for a fire emergency. The program is presented though a PowerPoint presentation to the residents and staff. The Service Coordinators and the Tulsa SHARE AmeriCorps members will continue to provide monthly fire safety training for residents using this curriculum.Ms. Melissa GrahamVice President Community RelationsHousing Authority of the City of Tulsa
FOCUS ON FAMILIES
The lack of skills and resources needed to raise a healthy, well-rounded family is a challenge that faces many residents living within the Housing Authority apartment communities. Trying to obtain employment, going back to school, or strengthening parenting values. The Focus on Families curriculum addresses these often overlooking needs by giving residents valuable information on preventative care such as child safety, disaster planning, immunizations, and childcare. It also offers techniques to help strengthen ties between a parent and child.
Ms. Melissa GrahamVice President Community RelationsHousing Authority of the City of Tulsa

MENTORING FOR ALL AGES
Tulsa Housing Authority (THA) makes every effort to provide community involvement for elderly and disabled tenants of public housing. The Service Coordinators, AmeriCorps Members, and eight residents from THA's high-rise communities collaborated in developing a mind-challenging program. They proposed a partnership with one of Tulsa Public School's Early Childhood Development Centers to start a mentoring program. This program would assist in guiding and helping a young person in his or her development while encouraging the elderly to become mobilized volunteers. Closing the generational gap, this process proved to all who were involved that relationships can be made across all ages.
Ms. Melissa GrahamVice President Community RelationsHousing Authority of the City of Tulsa
RESIDENT ASSOCIATION MONTHLY NEWSLETTER
With today's fast-paced atmosphere, many people miss relevant information either by miscommunication or lack of communication completely. The lack of confidence and motivation, along with transportation barriers among residents, prevented them from attending employment readiness programs elsewhere. With the relationships already established among the residents and service coordinators, SAGE provided these residents an on-site program to build confidence and skills needed to gain employment. Residents who have attended this program have gone on to gain employment or to enroll in other employment programs or school.
Ms. Melissa GrahamVice President Community RelationsHousing Authority of the City of Tulsa

SITE CALENDARS
Motivating large groups of individuals and keeping lines of communication open is a challenge in any community. Many residents do not have such luxuries as a house phone, television, transportation, ect. Thus, they are not aware of the services available. These same residents my even lack the social skills necessary to develop healthy relationships amount their neighbors, adding communication issues and information being lost. In an effort to promote programs and upcoming local agency events, the Housing Authority develops and mass distributes what is called a monthly site calendar.
Ms. Melissa GrahamVice President Community RelationsHousing Authority of the City of Tulsa

WALK FOR LIFE ACROSS AMERICA
Research has shown that inactive lifestyles can cause poor circulation, brittle bones, and even dementia. Several of our senior residents of the Housing Authority high rise were starting to voice their concerns about their own lifestyle. The Service Coordinator, AmeriCorps members and some of the residents began to brainstorm ways to alleviate some of these problems. Walking was the answer and thus started the senior program appropriately named, "Walk for Life Across America." The program was designed to be one that the residents could do at their own pace, either in groups or alone.
Ms. Melissa GrahamVice President Community RelationsHousing Authority of the City of Tulsa

YOUTH AT HEART
Growing up, teens are presented with such challenges as peer pressure, drug and alcohol abuse, gang violence, and teen pregnancy. However, after funding ceased to exist, the B&G Club withdrew their services and the center became solely managed by the CCHA. Programs have continued intermittently as funding from various grants became available; however, this remained a very competitive process and funding continued to be a challenge. Thus, the objective of the CCHA was to establish a consistent, ongoing academic youth development program that is not wholly dependent on grants, lending to the creation of the Community for Youth Program.
Mr. Richard FrancoCEOHousing Authority of the City of Corpus Christi

ADMISSIONS: OUTREACH PROGRAM FOR THE HOMELESS
In 2007, Fort Worth Housing Authority (FWHA) initiated meetings with homeless shelter administrators to identify potential collaborative projects.
